"I'm frustrated because my son is not able to receive a service. What can be done?"
At Telos Academy, there are a number of resources that we provide to students who need extra support. However, the timing and availability of these resources is limited in some cases by several factors. Some of these factors are cyclical (like a sports season only occurring once at the pre-determined time of each year) and some are irregular (such as when a staff leaves abruptly or needs to change their schedule and we lose a tutoring resource). In any case, it can be frustrating to not receive services one feels are critical to success.
While we cannot accommodate in all instances, it is helpful to understand the factors at play and share a correct view of the situation. Let's review some of the more common instances of this at Telos Academy:
While we cannot accommodate in all instances, it is helpful to understand the factors at play and share a correct view of the situation. Let's review some of the more common instances of this at Telos Academy:
Executive Function Coaching |
Students are placed in formal Executive Function Coaching once they have:
1) Clearly demonstrated dysfunction and a need for a strong intervention 2) Shown consistency in receiving other interventions successfully and worked with Telos staff in a cooperative way in various settings (Academic and otherwise). 3) Demonstrated proper understanding and buy-in regarding EF Coaching and the higher expectations of a student who enrolls in the program. *Our long term internal research shows that students who reach Sun Phase successfully respond significantly better to the EF intervention as they have met these three conditions in several areas as they clinically progress. **Each quarter, new students are considered for enrollment into this intervention. However, with only two EF coaches the schedule limits the number of students who can be enrolled at a time. Students who meet the conditions above take first priority, and then are assessed in regards to the intensity of their dysfunction. Students with the stronger disability are given preference. |
Academic Content Tutoring |
Academic tutors are available frequently throughout the year, however this intervention is limited in the following factors:
A) Availability of the tutors and the frequency of which they are able to be present (some are only available a handful of days each week) B) A students individual credit needs and their class schedule C) Skill level of the tutors that are available (e.g. some language or math tutors have good grasp on communicating foundational concepts but simply are not qualified to assist in higher content levels) |
